Lately I’ve Been Thinking

Today I am thinking about names, what’s in a name, remembering names and such.  The bible says that God has our names engraved on the palms of his hands. To me that is just really awesome.  I told the owner of Wiard’s just yesterday, that when he comes back this spring he will see a new sign with the name changed (just kidding).  My granddaughter tells me that she is very popular this year at school because “everyone” knows her name.  So off my brain goes pondering names.

In bible days names were given that represented characteristics that parents planned or hoped their children would display.  Today we as often see people choose names based on the sounds, what is popular or who a child is being named after.  Names in a business are often used more for marketing; what will this name say to a customer about who we are or what we offer.

Our business name, Wiard’s Orchards and Country Fair is an example of that. In a time when businesses were named after the owner, Wiard’s was just that Wiard’s, then came the cider mill and we were Wiard’s Cider Mill, for a while we were Wiard’s Orchards & Cider Mill, well wouldn’t you know it, we added the Country Fair and decided that the name should tell more of what we do so we reinvented the name to Wiard’s Orchards, Cider Mill and Country Fair.  After a while that seems just too long so we shortened the name to Wiard’s Orchards and Country Fair.  Now, I am pretty sure that when people search for us on the internet they just search Wiard’s, which is perfectly okay since that’s exactly where we started! Wiard’s for 179 years, that’s a trustworthy name.
